Stephen Cornford is a sculptor
working with music, sound and noise, whose interests lie in the relationship
between the physical and spatial attributes of sounding objects, musical
instruments and audio technologies and their acoustic properties or timbral
characteristics. Using processes of mechanisation and automation to ensure
that control of the resultant music is as contingent upon aleatoric sonic
phenomena as it is on his own design of the system, Cornford's installations
employ space as a physical and acoustic substance in order to provoke
the audience into a durational and subjective encounter with the work.
Stephen Cornford currently lives in Devon and
works in a barn. Over the last three years he has exhibited and performed
widely at venues and festivals across the UK and Europe, including Mediations
Biennale, Poland; Diskurs 07, Germany and Arnolfini, Bristol. He is one
half of the mechanised rock band Human Separation and his own solo work
straddles the practices of experimental music, kinetic sculpture and guerilla
actions. He has recently graduated from an MA at Dartington College of
Arts.
